Let's take a look together at five exciting facts that have shaped the fashion behavior of Germans in 2023. From frequent bad purchases to the flourishing second-hand market, from the eternal duel between stationary fashion retailers and online shopping to the tempting sales offers and the diverse shopping basket.

Common bad purchases
Bad purchases are a widespread problem in Germany. According to a survey by Statista , 16% of women and 9% of men often buy clothes that they never wear. Compared to other European countries, German consumers are in the middle range. The highest rate of bad purchases can be seen in England, where 29% of women and 16% of men often buy clothes that then hang unworn in the closet.

Second hand market

Interestingly, interest in second-hand fashion is increasing. The German Retail Association (HDE) recently reported that one in four people in Germany can imagine buying and giving second-hand gifts for Christmas. Overall, the willingness to buy second-hand fashion is increasing.

Stationary fashion retail vs. online shopping

When it comes to shopping, many people still prefer brick-and-mortar fashion stores to online shopping. According to a recent Infas quo study, more than 20% of respondents would definitely like to go to the local store when buying new clothes. Only 10% say they will definitely shop online.

Sale Offers

Although there are many price promotions, consumers have not bought more fashion on sale. The share of clothing purchased at reduced prices remained stable at 40% in 2023. Market observers suspect that inflation is causing many people to forgo fashion shopping.

Shopping Cart

Last year, the Federal Statistical Office published the reweighting of the basket of goods used to calculate the inflation rate. According to this, consumers in Germany spend 4.2% of their disposable income on clothing, accessories and shoes. The figure is around 3.3% for clothing items and around 0.7% for shoes. 0.2% is spent on accessories, clothing accessories and cleaning and repairing the items.
